Annual Base Salary
Annual base salary as of January 1, 2025. Does not include overtime, draws, commissions, bonuses, incentive pay, profit sharing, retirement benefits paid, other cash compensation, and the monetary value of any other benefits.

Total Cash Compensation
Total compensation, including the annual base salary as of January 1, 2025 and the approximate additional cash compensation awarded in the 12 months prior to January 1, 2025. Additional cash compensation includes overtime, draws, commissions, bonuses, incentive pay, profit sharing, retirement benefits paid. It excludes base pay and the monetary value of any other benefits.

Statistics

Mean
The arithmetic average, calculated by summing all response and dividing by the number of responses. The mean is sometimes strongly influenced by extreme values in the distribution.

25th percentile
25% of those selected earn less than this amount.

50th percentile
50% of those selected earn less than this amount.

The metropolitan areas reported are those defined as CBSAs (Core Based Statistical Areas) by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for purposes of collecting, tabulating and publishing federal data. They are also used extensively by the U.S. Census Bureau. Metropolitan statistical areas have at least one urbanized area of 50,000 or more population, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties. These areas are defined in terms of whole counties or county equivalents. The Census Divisions reported are also standards employed by the U.S. Census Bureau. The 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and territories are divided into nine geographic divisions with similar aggregate characteristics; added to this list are APOs (the U.S. armed services postal service).

About The Compensation Survey and This Calculator

This compensation calculator is based on a survey conducted and reported for the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) in 2025 by Readex Research, an independent research company. The functionality of this website was also developed by Readex.

Sample Composition and Data Collection

Data was collected via secure website developed and hosted by Readex Research, an independent research company. ALA invited firms to participate in the online survey between June 30, 2025 and August 19, 2025.

The survey was closed for tabulation on August 19, 2025. Readex Research handled all data processing and tabulation. Following an analysis of return completeness and responses from duplicate firm locations identified, those that were incomplete or duplicated were removed. This prepared report includes survey responses from 201 firms answering for 992 locations.

About This Calculator

Compensation data was weighted by the number of incumbents reported for that firm’s location. To preserve respondent confidentiality and present meaningful results, reporting adapts Antitrust Safety Zone conditions articulated by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC): Results are suppressed (either hidden completely or displayed as an *) when based on insufficient cases, or when a single case accounts for a preponderance of reported incumbents. For this calculator, all statistics are suppressed due to not enough locations reporting for this position and/or one location’s total number of reported incumbents at that position is a quarter or more of that position’s total incumbents.

By checking off boxes on the Compensation Calculator page, the user can build a nearly infinite number of different queries on this data — learning typical compensation for those within a certain job function and with years of experience of less than 1 years, who supervise 1-5 employees and hold a BA/BS/BSA degree, for instance. Ranges can be built up (e.g., those with less than 1 OR 1 up to 2 years of experience) by checking more than one box for a given variable. Clicking INCLUDE ALL removes all filters for that variable.

The results show the mean and three percentiles (25th, 50th, and 75th) of data for both the user's selection situation and for all reported respondents (for comparison).
